STYLE | BLACK DAHLIA IN CHARLESTON

13.8.16

I love South Carolina. In particular, I found myself fascinated by Charleston. The sights, the food, the overwhelming amount of locally made and fairtrade products that flooded Market and King Streets were all part of the experience.
I roamed around Charleston in this mini Fairtrade dress from The Fair Shop in Brighton, a bag from Baskets of Cambodia, a variety of vintage and ethical bracelets, a bone and raffia Fairtrade necklace from [where I cannot remember for the life of me], and vintage sandals I bought in NYC a few years back.

As with most of my ethical clothing, my dress and bag are made by initiatives that work towards helping disadvantaged women and children. The dress is by MAHAGUTHI, a brand that trains destitute women in Nepal, free of charge in weaving, sewing, knitting and literacy. In addition, it supports the education of the children of the women attending the programme.
The bag is made by another initiative that empowers women--Baskets of Cambodia--which I bought in the Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC. BASKETS OF CAMBODIA is committed to an upward bias and a business model that is fair and empowering to the people who are hand crafting each and every item.
