A KINKY KINDA BEAUTIFUL | Carol's Daughter Curly Hair Milk

25.2.13

So this is my first natural hair review--something Emma needed wanted me to do for quite some time now. I've refrained for this long as I was never keen on revealing the before or during, just the after, of my hair maintenance regime. I have been growing my hair naturally for almost a year, with numerous chops to my coif. Today, I will be reviewing Carol's Daughter Hair Milk, which includes the Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner (the main component), the Leave-In Moisturiser, & the Pudding.

What it Promises
This is a "rich moisturising cream that quickly and easily absorbs into your curls, coils, kinks and waves to leave them defined, glossy and frizz-free." So if you have dry curly hair, this promises to put moisture back in and get rid of any frizz. It contains hydrating elements like Cocoa and Shea Butters, plus Soybean Oil to soften and strengthen it. There is also Agave Nectar to ensure that your curls, coils, kinks and waves keep moisture locked in and are extra-healthy. No Parabens, No Petroleum, No Mineral Oil, No Artificial Colors. Continue to Read my Review.

Needless to say,  I don't think that I have been the best example of a natural hair girl, and actually have some really bad habits, which I will disclose at another time. However, I am hoping that this will force me to be a bit more diligent in my hair regime. Since turning natural, have always used Carol's Daughter, Trader Joe's or WEN, but have only recently tried Carol's Daughter Hair Milk, after my mother brought some home on my most recent visit to my parents' home in the USA.

My Hair
My hair is usually dry and coarse, and tends to soak up moisture like no one's business. At this time of year it gets extra dry, which requires me to spray it with water and essential oils a couple times a day, every day. I am guessing my hair is a 4b or c (no idea, I've only discovered this categorisation a few weeks ago).

Smell
They are all very pleasant, but the co-wash might come off a bit too strong for the sensitive folks. I got compliments that my hair smelt wonderful, so that's always a good sign (what on earth are people doing smelling my hair???), especially as I was not affected by it myself.

Feel
The Co-Wash has a decent slip, and has a nice thickness to it. The Leave-in, as well as the pudding, which are waterbased, are light and does not weigh down my hair.

Usually I wash my own hair, but as my mother, who once owned the best salon in Guyana, insisted on doing it.

Results
After the Co-Wash my hair immediately felt soft and moisturised. There were still tangles, but to a lesser extent that previously. Needless to say, I am not counting on this for maximum slip--i.e. ability for my fingers and a comb to pass through my hair freely. The Leave-in moisturiser was not heavy enough to moisturise my hair using the recommended amount, so I had to use some extra, along with my daily moisturising mixture made from natural essential oils. Hence, I will probably mix some of the leave-in into my daily moisturising mix instead. As for the pudding, it gave great hold to my two-strand twists, which will be featured in another post. I would recommend it for my curly girls if you do not need a heavy product and if your hair is in serious need of moisture.

  1. Hi Stacy - I found your review quite inspiring. I plan on using the products tonight as I feel like washing my hair. I have been slacking on sticking to a regimen...so I'm forcing myself to begin again.

  2. Thank you for your review Stacy. I've tried CD's products so many times, perm and natural hair and they just do not work for me. I have very dry hair, and i don't find them moisturizing enough. Unless i'm doing something wrong. I get better results from Ouidad and Shea moisture products. :)
